Sport and imagination

As with last year, it was a joy to be part of the celebrations with Moretonville Junior Football Club on Saturday evening. Julie and I sat in on (and handed out some of the awards) the prize giving ceremony for the club. There is such great energy and commitment from everyone - the young footballers themselves of course! But also all the managers, referees, administrators and parents who all work hard together to keep the show on the road for the 400 youngsters who play football every week up on the football pitches owned by the University on the Gawcott Road. I can't imagine how complex it must be to coordinate all that! And I love how inclusive, Phil Doran, the current Club Chair has led the club to become: there is slot for everyone who wants to play or support youth football.

Phil asked me to say a few words about how important football and sport are to the town. And I just went on to emphasise that sport encourages people (young and old) to dream and to imagine sporting achievement. It seems to me that sport is designed to help people flex and tone their imagination 'muscles' as well as physical ones. So I thanked everyone for helping make Buckingham increase its 'Imagination Quotient' by enabling people to get used to dreaming of success: something we all need to do more of!

Congratulations to all!

The stage is set
